Government Shuts Down Seven Radio Stations Over Security and Regulatory Breaches

The Ghanaian government has shut down seven radio stations, including Gumah FM in Bawku, citing national security concerns and regulatory violations. The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, led by Samuel Nartey George, issued the directive, instructing the National Communications Authority (NCA) to take immediate action.

Gumah FM Shut Down Over National Security Concerns

The shutdown of Gumah FM in Bawku follows an emergency Regional Security Council meeting on February 11, 2025. Authorities accused the station of inciting violence, disrupting public order, and escalating tensions in the region.

According to the Ministry, the directive aligns with Section 13(1)(e) of the Electronic Communications Act, 2008 (Act 775), which grants the NCA the authority to suspend or revoke radio frequencies in the interest of national security and public order.

As part of the order:

  • Gumah FM must immediately cease operations.
  • Authorities will monitor the situation to prevent alternative platforms from fueling unrest.

Six More Radio Stations Shut Down for Regulatory Violations

In a separate directive, six additional radio stations were closed for failing to comply with licensing regulations. These stations operated without proper authorization, failed to renew their licenses, or neglected to meet statutory payment obligations.

The affected stations include:

  1. Fire Group of Companies, Sunyani – 90.1MHz
  2. I-Zar Consult Limited, Tamale – 89.7MHz
  3. Abochannel Media Group, Adidome – 105.7MHz
  4. Okyeame Radio Limited, Bibiani – 99.7MHz
  5. Mumen Bono Foundation, Techiman – 99.7MHz
  6. Osikani Community FM, Nkrankwanta – 99.7MHz

Government Enforces Media Regulations

The Ministry of Communication reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing regulatory compliance and warned that more shutdowns could follow as the ongoing frequency authorization audit continues.

Media organizations have been urged to adhere strictly to licensing requirements to avoid similar actions.
