2025 AFCONQ: Accra Sports Stadium gets conditional approval to host Ghana v Sudan game

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially approved the Accra Sports Stadium to host Ghana’s upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Sudan later this month. This decision follows the recent ban on the Baba Yara Stadium due to its poor pitch conditions.

CAF officials carried out inspections of both the Accra and Cape Coast stadiums over the weekend to determine a suitable venue for the match. After thorough evaluation, the Accra Sports Stadium was conditionally cleared to host the game.

In a letter addressed to Prosper Harrison Addo, General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), CAF stated: “After a detailed review of the reports from the independent inspection teams on the Accra and Cape Coast stadia, we are pleased to inform you that the Accra Sports Stadium has been given the go-ahead to host the AFCON Qualifiers for Morocco 2025. Specifically, the stadium will host the Group F – Matchday 3 fixture between Ghana and Sudan, scheduled for October 11, 2024.

“As part of this approval, we urge the GFA and the stadium management team to focus on improving the playing surface and addressing other essential areas of the stadium before the match day to ensure a quality experience for both the teams and the fans in attendance.

“CAF will continue to monitor the stadium’s readiness ahead of the game and for future CAF-sanctioned events.”

This will mark the Black Stars’ first competitive match at the Accra Sports Stadium in three years, with their last appearance being against Sao Tome and Principe. Since then, the senior national team’s key matches have primarily been held in Cape Coast and Kumasi.

Ghana will face Sudan on Friday, October 11, for their third game in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers. Just a few days later, on Monday, October 14, the Black Stars will travel to Libya for the return leg at the Martyrs of February Stadium.

Thus far in the qualifiers, Ghana has struggled, suffering a 1-0 loss to Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium and drawing 1-1 with Nigeria’s Super Eagles in Berkane. These results leave the Black Stars third in Group F with only one point.
