President Nana Akufo-Addo has urged the clergy to exercise caution and restraint in making predictions about the upcoming December 7 election results. He encouraged religious leaders to prioritize respect and prudence during this crucial electoral period.
Speaking on behalf of the president at the “Agent of Peace” campaign, organized by the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) on Sunday, November 3, 2024, Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Stephen Asamoah Boateng conveyed the president’s message. The president emphasized the essential role of the clergy in fostering a peaceful and respectful atmosphere as the nation approaches the elections.
Akufo-Addo appealed to religious and political leaders to avoid inflammatory language or premature declarations of victory, stressing the importance of unity and the influence these leaders have on Ghana’s stability. Highlighting Ghana’s status as a beacon of democracy, he called for constructive and respectful political dialogue, urging stakeholders to refrain from rhetoric that could create division or mislead voters.
“Democracy is about more than elections; however, elections are fundamental to democratic legitimacy, providing a peaceful means for political power transitions,” he said.
The president further noted that Ghana has matured as a democracy and must continue to hold peaceful elections. He warned against provocative or abusive language during campaigns and cautioned against assuming a party’s victory before votes are cast.
“I urge our respected members of the clergy to temper predictions from those among them who are prematurely declaring election outcomes,” President Akufo-Addo added, underscoring the need for all leaders to support an environment of unity and stability.
