President Akufo-Addo highlighted key advancements in Ghana’s judicial sector under his administration since taking office in 2017, during his address at the Public Sector Lawyers Conference in Accra on Tuesday, November 5.
The President shared that notable progress has been achieved in employment and service quality within the sector. “Since 2017, we have made substantial strides in strengthening our services,” he stated. He announced the recruitment of 119 State Attorneys, with an additional 70 appointments soon to be formalized. This recruitment, he noted, constitutes nearly half of the current legal workforce within the Office of the Attorney General.
He further emphasized that staffing within legal departments across state-owned institutions has more than doubled, bringing the number of public sector lawyers to approximately 600. These lawyers, he noted, have also benefited from government-sponsored scholarships for advanced studies.
President Akufo-Addo underscored the importance of Ghana’s representation in international arbitration cases, noting that the country now has skilled legal professionals handling arbitration disputes abroad, an achievement he credited to his administration’s commitment and diligence.
Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame, also speaking at the event, pledged to further modernize the sector by establishing new Attorney General’s offices in multiple regions across Ghana under the next NPP government. Dame highlighted Ghana’s success in arbitration cases over the last four years, noting that the country has saved around $90 billion by maintaining a spotless record in these disputes.
