President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has inaugurated the 97-kilometer Tema-Mpakadan railway line, a landmark infrastructure project set to revolutionize Ghana’s transportation landscape.
The commissioning ceremony, held on November 22 at Tema Harbour, marked the completion of Ghana’s first standard gauge railway, built at a cost of $447 million with funding from India-Exim Bank.
In his address, President Akufo-Addo underscored the project’s importance in overcoming persistent challenges in the nation’s transportation sector.
“This milestone—the first standard gauge railway in Ghana—represents a significant leap forward in modernising our transport systems and fostering economic growth,” the President stated.
He highlighted the railway’s critical role in Ghana’s inaugural multimodal transport system, seamlessly linking rail, road, and inland water networks. The system connects Tema Port to Buipe Port through the Volta Lake, enhancing trade and regional integration.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted the transformative impact of the Tema-Mpakadan railway line, emphasizing its potential to tackle major developmental challenges associated with Ghana’s reliance on road transport for long-distance freight and passenger travel.
“This railway will significantly ease congestion on our roads, reducing the health and safety risks posed by heavy traffic, the rapid deterioration of road infrastructure, and the alarming rise in road accidents,” the President remarked.
He described the new railway line as a “lifeline” for communities and businesses, noting its capacity to lower transportation costs, boost agricultural trade, and streamline port operations.
“The benefits of this project are profound and far-reaching,” the President said. “By reducing the burden on our road network, we will extend the lifespan of key routes, particularly those along the eastern corridor. At the same time, it will lower the costs associated with transporting bulk goods, agricultural produce, and containers, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of businesses across the country.”
President Akufo-Addo underscored the railway’s role in providing a reliable and cost-effective transportation alternative for communities with limited road access, enhancing both convenience and connectivity.
“This project ensures improved accessibility for passengers in underserved areas, delivering a transportation option that is both dependable and economical,” he stated.
The railway is set to streamline the movement of key goods, including fuel, cement, and agricultural produce, while strengthening the competitive edge of Ghana’s ports by reducing vessel wait times and enhancing cargo handling operations.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to modernizing the nation’s infrastructure, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the broader vision for railway development under the 2020 revised Railway Master Plan.
“The Tema-Mpakadan Railway Line is a critical component of our long-term strategy. Guided by the revised Railway Master Plan, we remain resolute in our efforts to extend Ghana’s railway network, unlocking new opportunities for economic growth and development,” the President declared.
President Akufo-Addo expressed optimism about Ghana’s future as he inaugurated the Tema-Mpakadan railway line, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and investment in building a prosperous and interconnected nation.
“This vision demands continuous investment, strong partnerships, and unwavering national commitment. As we commission this transformative project today, I am filled with hope for the brighter future it promises. Together, we can create a Ghana that is efficient, interconnected, and thriving,” he remarked.
The President acknowledged the vital contributions of the Indian government, traditional leaders, and local communities in making the project a reality.
“I am profoundly grateful to the chiefs and residents of the communities impacted by this project. Your sacrifices, cooperation, and patience have been instrumental. This infrastructure belongs to you, and I encourage you to take pride in it and safeguard it for future generations,” he said.
Calling for unity in maintaining the railway, President Akufo-Addo highlighted its role as a national asset that will empower communities, boost businesses, and support industrial growth. He urged all Ghanaians to share the responsibility of preserving this critical development.
