New Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim celebrated a dramatic 3-2 victory over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League on his Old Trafford debut. Despite the triumph, the 39-year-old admitted feeling anxious as his players adapt to his tactical approach.
Amorim’s relief was evident when Rasmus Højlund netted his first of two goals, leveling the score before halftime. The Portuguese manager is implementing a wing-back system unfamiliar to the squad, a challenge compounded by a congested fixture schedule and limited training sessions.
“We’re still learning,” Amorim told TNT Sports. “I’m anxious because we haven’t had much time to work together. I don’t know the players well yet, so each game comes with excitement but also uncertainty.”
United’s ongoing injury issues remain a concern, despite some players returning. Tyrell Malacia, starting his first game in 18 months, lasted only 45 minutes in the demanding left wing-back role. Luke Shaw made a second consecutive substitute appearance, while Lisandro Martinez returned from injury to start but was later replaced.
Meanwhile, Mason Mount, plagued by injuries since joining from Chelsea, made his first start since August.
United’s performance was bolstered by Alejandro Garnacho’s 48-second opener and Højlund’s double, helping the team recover from a seven-minute first-half lapse that saw them fall behind.
Amorim praised the team’s improvements, saying: “We controlled the tempo better, pushed higher up the pitch, and created more chances. But we need to finish games off earlier.”
Missed opportunities, including Garnacho’s squandered chances and a Marcus Rashford effort that flashed across the goal, left the manager wanting more.
Højlund’s performance as the focal point in Amorim’s system drew praise and constructive criticism. The £72 million signing from Atalanta showed his quality with aggressive play in the box, scoring two vital goals. However, Amorim highlighted areas for improvement.
“He’s crucial in transitions and holds the ball well, but he takes too many touches sometimes,” Amorim explained. “He’s a quality player, scoring the toughest goals, but there’s more to come from him.”
Despite the challenges, Amorim appears to be relishing his role. United fans gave him a warm reception, chanting his name and cheering him off the pitch after the win.
“The support was incredible,” Amorim said. “I’ve just arrived, and half the stadium doesn’t know me. I’ve achieved nothing here yet, but their welcome made me feel part of the family. I hope to live up to their expectations.”
With United’s hectic schedule offering little respite, Amorim knows the task ahead is daunting. Yet, his first Old Trafford victory suggests he is ready to take it on.
