Ecuadorian international Marco Angulo has passed away at the age of 22, following a prolonged battle with injuries sustained in a car accident, his club, LDU Quito, has confirmed.
The young midfielder had been hospitalized since the accident on October 7, which occurred in the southern part of Ecuador’s capital, Quito. Reports indicate that Angulo underwent multiple surgeries and spent over a week in intensive care before his passing on Monday night.
“With deep sorrow and sadness, we regret to inform you of the death of our dear player Marco Angulo,” LDU Quito, a team in Ecuador’s top league, shared in a statement on Tuesday morning. “We extend our condolences to his family and loved ones. His passing is an irreplaceable loss that will leave a lasting impact on our hearts.”
Angulo, who had joined LDU Quito on loan from MLS side FC Cincinnati in March, made 16 appearances for the club. His last match was on October 6, the day before the tragic accident.
In addition to his club career, Angulo represented Ecuador at the international level. He earned his first cap in November 2022 in a 0-0 draw against Iraq and went on to make three appearances for the national team.
The Ecuadorian Football Association also expressed their sorrow, stating, “The Ecuadorian Football Association expresses its deepest sympathy over the death of Marco Angulo. Marco was not only an outstanding player but also a beloved teammate. His loss brings profound sorrow to all who knew him, especially those who shared training camps, trips, and matches with him. Rest in peace, Angulito.”
Reports in Ecuador revealed that the accident also claimed the lives of Roberto Cabezas, a player for Independiente del Valle, and another friend, Victor Carcopa. Two additional passengers were in the vehicle, though their conditions remain unknown.
