Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has called on Members of Parliament (MPs) to carefully balance their legislative duties with campaign activities as the December 7 general elections draw closer.
Speaking during the 5th meeting of the Fourth Session on Tuesday, October 15, Bagbin highlighted the importance of maintaining a strong focus on parliamentary responsibilities, even as MPs dedicate time to their election campaigns.
He acknowledged that while election campaigns are crucial, they should not overshadow MPs’ core legislative duties, especially with key national matters that demand urgent attention.
“The electoral process is vital, but we must not lose sight of the fact that our primary role as lawmakers is equally important, particularly with significant issues still before Parliament,” Bagbin noted.
He reminded MPs of the pressing legislative agenda, including crucial bills such as the Environmental Protection Bill, Parliamentary Service Bill, and Parliamentary Transition Bill, which require immediate deliberation and approval.
“The upcoming legislative tasks are critical and time-sensitive. We need to handle them with the seriousness they deserve,” he emphasized.
Bagbin urged MPs to effectively manage their time and energy, ensuring that their campaign commitments do not interfere with fulfilling their parliamentary obligations, stating that both are essential to the nation’s progress.
