Former Morocco and Marseille midfielder Abdelaziz Barrada has passed away at the age of 35.

While the exact cause of death is yet to be confirmed, Moroccan media reports suggest he suffered a heart attack.

Barrada retired from professional football in 2021 after earning 26 caps for Morocco, including an appearance at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. He scored four international goals, with his final one in 2015.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation expressed deep sorrow on social media, calling his passing “a great loss.” “The Royal Moroccan Football Federation extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Abdelaziz Barrada, his relatives, and the entire national football community,” their statement read.

Barrada’s career included 64 appearances with Spanish side Getafe from 2011 to 2013, as well as two goals for Marseille, where he played between 2014 and 2016.

Marseille also paid tribute, posting on social media: “The club sends its sincere condolences to his family and joins his loved ones in mourning.”

After his time with the Ligue 1 club, Barrada played for Al-Nasr in the UAE, Turkey’s Antalyaspor, and finally for Lusitanos Saint-Maur in France, though he did not make any appearances before retiring three years ago.

Barrada, born in France, began his career with the reserves at Paris St-Germain, who also shared their condolences: “The club extends its heartfelt sympathies to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
