Cynthia Mamle Morrison, an independent parliamentary candidate for Agona West, has been temporarily barred from presenting herself as a candidate in the 2024 elections by a District Magistrate Court in Agona Swedru.
The court issued an injunction on the candidate, ordering her to refrain from any actions related to the nomination process for the Agona West parliamentary seat. The lawsuit was filed by plaintiffs Emmanuel Addison, Solomon Nyarko, and Harrison K. Aglago, who took legal action against both Morrison and the Electoral Commission of Agona Swedru.
During the court session, the plaintiffs’ lawyer, Austin Kwabena Brako-Powers, successfully argued for an interlocutory injunction to prevent Morrison from proceeding with her candidacy until the matter is fully resolved. The decision halts Morrison’s candidacy temporarily, pending the outcome of the court’s resolution of the dispute.
Morrison, a former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, represented the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in both the 2016 and 2020 elections, winning the Agona West seat in both terms. However, in the 2024 NPP primaries, she lost to Christopher Arthur, securing only 152 votes against Arthur’s 240 votes.
In the wake of her loss, Morrison decided to run as an independent candidate, citing what she described as favouritism and a lack of transparency in the NPP’s candidate selection process. She expressed dissatisfaction with the way the primary was handled, leading to her decision to break away from the party and pursue a bid for re-election independently.
