“I want to build a modern, inclusive country anchored by systems and data” – Bawumia

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reaffirmed his commitment to creating a modern, inclusive Ghana built on systems and data-driven governance. In a recent interaction with members of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Accra, Dr. Bawumia expressed his vision of a country that is anchored in transparency, good governance, and inclusiveness.

“I aim to build a nation that embodies inclusiveness, good governance, and transparency, values that are important to all of you,” Dr. Bawumia stated. He emphasized that to establish a modern nation with these principles, it is essential to put in place effective systems that ensure a seamless transition and sustainable development.

Reflecting on his time in office, Dr. Bawumia noted that building these systems had been a key focus since the NPP took office. “When we assumed office, I prioritized the establishment of systems that would ensure transparency,” he explained. He pointed out that in a book he wrote in 2010, he had recommended the development of critical systems, including digital identity, a property address system, and financial inclusion, as vital components for the economic transformation of developing nations.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted that the implementation of the GhanaCard to resolve the identity issue, the digital address system to address the lack of proper addressing, and the mobile money interoperability to enhance financial inclusion were fundamental steps in creating a strong digital infrastructure. These initiatives, he noted, have laid the foundation for the digitalization of public services in Ghana.

Looking ahead, Dr. Bawumia shared his vision of building on these digital systems to further foster inclusivity, transparency, and combat corruption. “Digitalization brings greater inclusion, as seen with the mobile money interoperability and the reduction of human contact in many processes,” he said. He added, “It also ensures transparency, and I want to run a government where every transaction is traceable and cannot be erased.”

Dr. Bawumia revealed his plans to implement a blockchain-based e-government system, noting that countries like the UAE have successfully adopted blockchain technology for greater transparency. “I want Ghana to be the first country in Africa to introduce blockchain technology for governance,” he emphasized.

As a self-described problem-solver, Dr. Bawumia concluded, “I believe that the advancements made by developed countries can be improved upon, and we can do even better here in Ghana.”
