2025 AFCONQ-Fearless Sudan hold Black Stars to a goalless stalemate at the Accra Sports Stadium

The Black Stars of Ghana were held to a goalless draw by Sudan in their African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday evening. Despite a hard-fought match, neither side could break the deadlock, resulting in a 0-0 stalemate in their 14th meeting across all competitions.

Ghana began the game with an aggressive approach, pressing Sudan in search of an early goal. However, the Sudanese defense held firm, absorbing the pressure from the Black Stars. One of the game’s best opportunities came from Alexander Djiku, whose powerful header from a Mohammed Kudus corner hit the woodwork, leaving Ghana inches away from taking the lead.

The Black Stars continued to create chances, with Antoine Semenyo testing Sudanese goalkeeper Mohammed Mustafa with a right-footed strike from a tight angle. Mustafa responded with a key save to keep the game level. Sudan also had their moments, with Aboubaker Eisa unleashing a strong shot in the 36th minute, only to be denied by a brilliant save from Ghanaian goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi.

Ghana dominated possession, controlling 61% of the ball and creating more opportunities, including one clear chance and five attempts at goal, though none were on target. Sudan, meanwhile, adopted a more defensive strategy, hoping to hit Ghana on the counterattack. They managed three shots but were unable to trouble Ati-Zigi, who remained solid in goal.

As the second half unfolded, Ghana continued to press for a breakthrough, but the Sudanese defense remained resolute. In the 73rd minute, Mohamed Eisa came close to punishing the Black Stars when he broke through the defense, but Ati-Zigi once again saved the day with a crucial stop.

Antoine Semenyo had a few chances to score for Ghana, but the Sudanese defense and their goalkeeper stood firm, preventing any clear opportunities from being converted. Despite both teams’ efforts, the match ended in a 0-0 draw, with both goalkeepers showcasing excellent performances to keep their clean sheets intact.

Ultimately, the Black Stars were left frustrated, unable to capitalize on their dominance in possession, while Sudan walked away with a valuable point from the encounter.
