British High Commissioner lauds peace pact

The British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, has commended the signing of a Peace Pact by the presidential candidates ahead of Ghana’s December 7 general elections. She described the agreement as a critical step in preserving the nation’s democratic ideals.

“The signing of today’s Peace Pact is a significant and encouraging milestone in the electoral process, showcasing the candidates’ dedication to a peaceful and stable election,” Thompson remarked.

The presidential candidates formally committed to ensuring peaceful elections by endorsing the pact during a ceremony held at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra. The agreement emphasizes their resolve to conduct campaigns that promote unity and stability across the country before, during, and after the elections.

The event was graced by several prominent figures, including Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa, National Peace Council Chairman Reverend Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, and National Chief Imam Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.

Highlighting the United Kingdom’s support for Ghana’s democracy, Harriet Thompson praised the nation’s longstanding commitment to democratic governance. “The UK stands firmly with the people of Ghana, who remain a shining example of democracy in the region and beyond,” she noted.

Thompson also recognized the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders, including political parties, the Electoral Commission, security agencies, and civil society organizations, in ensuring Ghana’s democratic processes are upheld. “Those working tirelessly to safeguard Ghana’s democratic traditions—from political parties to civil society and security forces—can count on our unwavering support,” she affirmed.

Expressing optimism about the upcoming elections, Thompson underscored the importance of collective dedication to democratic values. “In this spirit of partnership, we anticipate a credible, transparent, inclusive, and peaceful election on December 7,” she concluded.

The signing of the Peace Pact solidifies Ghana’s status as a democratic leader in Africa, with presidential candidates and stakeholders reaffirming their shared commitment to peace and unity during this pivotal electoral period.
