Ghana Health Service Calls for Return to COVID-Era Sanitation Measures to Curb Cholera Outbreak

In response to an ongoing cholera outbreak in Ghana, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) is urging a return to the sanitation protocols established during the COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking at a press briefing on October 30, the Director-General of GHS, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, emphasized that reintroducing these measures, including regular handwashing, consuming warm food, and maintaining a clean environment, is essential to prevent further spread.

The cholera outbreak, primarily affecting the Ada East and West districts in the Greater Accra Region, has resulted in over fifty confirmed cases and two deaths. According to Dr. Kuma-Aboagye, while the severity of cases in Ada East has begun to lessen, maintaining strict hygiene practices is vital.

The GHS reports that local District Security Coordinating Councils have convened several meetings to evaluate and refine current intervention strategies. Discussions have also been initiated with neighboring West African countries to synchronize response efforts, as cholera continues to affect the region. Dr. Kuma-Aboagye highlighted the role of community leadership, particularly chiefs, in fostering clean environments and ensuring access to potable water.

As Ghana and its neighbors work to contain cholera, Dr. Kuma-Aboagye underscored that re-establishing COVID-era sanitary practices among travelers and local communities remains a crucial defense against further outbreaks.
