A cholera outbreak in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis has claimed five lives, prompting urgent measures to contain its spread.
The Metro Health Directorate has reported 161 suspected cases in November, with 28 confirmed. Metro Health Director Dr. Pious Mensah, speaking at a press briefing, revealed that the victims ranged in age from 9 to 40 years.
“We have recorded five fatalities due to cholera, with the majority of cases being male (65%) and 35% female. The situation is critical, and immediate action is needed,” Dr. Mensah said. He identified New Takoradi as the worst-affected area, followed by Takoradi and Effia.
Dr. Mensah appealed to private health facilities to provide free treatment for cholera patients, reassuring them that reimbursement could be claimed through regional medical stores and district hospitals. “Early reporting of cases is vital for effective treatment. This collaborative approach will encourage residents to seek help promptly,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Innocent Haligah, Assembly Coordinating Director of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly, announced a citywide cleanup campaign aimed at addressing poor sanitation, a major contributor to the outbreak.
“We must intensify education on cholera prevention and promote proper hygiene practices to stop its spread,” Haligah said. He urged residents to adopt cleanliness routines similar to those practiced during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The campaign seeks to enhance public awareness and foster community involvement in combating the outbreak, as authorities work to prevent further infections and loss of life.
