A Harare woman, Melocia Gwata, has sought a protection order against her husband, George Kusotera, accusing him of making extreme demands for intimacy and subjecting her to abuse when she refused.
Gwata took her case to the Harare Civil Court, where she described how Kusotera pressured her into having sex as many as eight times per night, resorting to violence if she declined.
“He insists on being intimate every day and wakes me in the middle of the night, even after we’ve already been intimate several times that day,” Gwata explained, highlighting the toll it has taken on her well-being, both physically and emotionally.
She revealed that when she could no longer meet his demands due to exhaustion and pain, Kusotera would become physically violent. His abuse even took place in front of their children, further compounding the distress. Gwata recalled how Kusotera threatened to divorce her if she didn’t comply, saying, “He insults me in front of the kids and tells them I am unworthy of being their mother.”
In response, Kusotera admitted to the accusations, apologizing for his actions. He claimed his behaviour stemmed from his love for her, saying, “I didn’t realize I was making her uncomfortable. I apologize and will not abuse her physically again.”
After listening to both parties, Magistrate Taruvinga issued a protection order in favor of Gwata, ensuring she is shielded from further harm.
