Dr. Emmanuel O. Akwetey, the Executive Director of the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG), has voiced concerns about Ghana’s readiness to ensure a peaceful electoral process for the upcoming December elections. He stressed that insufficient measures have been taken to prevent electoral violence and to strengthen public confidence in the electoral system.
During his speech at the IDEG Ghana Speaks High-Level Forum in Accra on Thursday, October 10, Dr. Akwetey, speaking on the theme “Advancing Peace, Unity, and National Cohesion in Ghana,” underscored that the steps necessary for a smooth and secure election have yet to be fully realized.
A key issue Dr. Akwetey raised was the lack of public trust in the Electoral Commission (EC), which is often criticized for its handling of electoral matters, particularly the process by which its officials are appointed. He noted that the appointment of EC leadership can sometimes be perceived as politically motivated, which erodes public confidence and exacerbates tensions during election periods.
Dr. Akwetey called for more transparent and comprehensive reforms within the electoral system, asserting that fostering trust in the Elections processes is critical to ensuring peace and unity in the country. He argued that without these reforms, Ghana risks undermining its national cohesion and the integrity of its elections. Dr. Akwetey’s comments serve as a reminder of the ongoing challenges facing Ghana’s electoral system as the country prepares for another crucial election.
