The NBA has announced an investigation following an alleged altercation between Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid and a reporter. The incident reportedly took place in the Sixers’ locker room after their 124-107 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday.
Embiid, who has not yet played this season due to a knee injury, allegedly confronted the reporter over an article that referenced his son and late brother, while also questioning his physical readiness and commitment to the team. The exchange is said to have turned tense, with Embiid reportedly warning, “The next time you bring up my dead brother and my son again, you are going to see what I’m going to do to you, and I’m going to have to live with the consequences.”
Witnesses indicate that as the conversation escalated, Embiid, 30, allegedly pushed the reporter on the shoulder before a team official intervened. Embiid later expressed frustration over criticism of his commitment, saying, “When I see people saying ‘he doesn’t want to play’ – I’ve done way too much for this city, putting myself at risk, for people to be saying that.”
The NBA released a statement acknowledging they are “aware of reports of an incident in the Sixers locker room this evening and are commencing an investigation.” Additionally, Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey told ESPN that the team is also conducting its own investigation and is treating the matter “very seriously.”
