The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has denounced the recent attack on firefighters. In a statement released on September 10, 2024, Divisional Officer (DO) II Desmond E. Ackah, Head of Public Relations, disclosed that two incidents had transpired, leaving one firefighter severely injured and another traumatised while performing their duties. He stated that the first incident happened last Tuesday, when Assistant Divisional Officer (ADO) Abdul Aziz Annor was attacked by a driver and his mate during the resupply of the station’s fire truck at the La Palm T-junction in Accra.
He also mentioned that the two suspects in the assault had been apprehended and released on bail yesterday, September 9, with two sureties each of Gh¢5000. Regarding the second incident, he clarified that last Thursday, while responding to a fire close to the Dansoman roundabout, firemen from the Dansoman Fire Station were subjected to both verbal and physical attacks by the locals.
The public was reassured by Mr. Ackah that the Dansoman Police had been tasked with handling the situation and that investigations were in progress to guarantee that those responsible were held accountable. He emphasised to the populace that attacking firefighters was forbidden and would result in severe legal repercussions. He also issued a warning, saying that the service would protect its employees and make sure that anyone who attacks a fireman gets the entire weight of the law behind them.
