Chinedu Okoli, also known as Flavour in the Nigerian music scene, has reiterated the claim made by Jamaican reggae icon Buju Banton that Afrobeats performers are “lazy” in a recent statement. Flavour, who is well-known for his wide range of musical abilities and contributions to the African music scene, encouraged his peers to go beyond creative boundaries and put the caliber of their music first. He expressed his worry that many Afrobeats musicians nowadays place too much emphasis on catchy hooks and repetitive beats rather than lyrical depth and musical innovation.
He stated that “Banton was on point” when he added that Afrobeats lacked depth since its artists are lazy. He made these statements while appearing on a recent episode of the “In My Opinion” podcast platform.
He therefore expressed his disapproval of the Western media’s propensity to lump all African artists under the Afrobeats umbrella, noting that his music is rooted in highlife, a genre that is distinct from Afrobeats. This highlights the need for greater recognition and respect for the diversity of African music genres.
