The German side arguably put up a spirited performance when they defeated Nigeria 3-1 in the U-20 Women’s World Cup tie held on Wednesday night in Bogotá.
Nigeria who had in their immediately preceding match beaten North Korea in the most dramatic of terms thanks to a Flourish Sabastine, shot goal went into the match rearing to go. But the Falconets’ rhythm was soon dampened when Germany, in an excellent Alara Sehitler broke the deadlock with a neat finish in the 17th minute putting the Nigerians on the back foot.
However, it was the 2014 champions who ended the first half with the better score line in the match in this recovery minded Nigerian senior team. Nigeria was able to come back into the match after the break and dominate the match as well. Chiamaka Okwuchukwu scored an equalizing goal in the 50th minute as a result of the constant pressure exerted.
Germany did not take long to respond though, with Sofie Zdebel equalizing by scoring after a fine team combination play in the sixty minute. From that point, Germany assumed the match and despite the best efforts of Nigeria to pull through, they were unable to convert the chances they made.
In the second half of the additional minutes, another player, Sarah Ernst came from the bench and made the third goal to make Germany top the Group D and leaving Noigria at the second position.
At the same time, in Cali Morocco lost to United States 0-2 and it was placed at the last position in Group C with two consecutive losses in the tournament. This result coupled with Nigeria and Cameroon 1-0 loss to Colombia makes it a hard round for African teams. As such, all the focus will now turn to Ghana who will hope to redeem themselves in a match against Japan which will be played later today in Bogotá.
