The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has requested the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) to appoint a new presidential candidate within 10 days following the recent passing of the party’s leader, Madam Akua Donkor.
This development has also prompted the EC to temporarily halt the nearly completed printing of presidential ballot papers. The Commission’s decision followed its receipt of official notification about Madam Akua Donkor’s death.
In an October 29 statement, the EC announced, “The Commission has since informed the GFP to make arrangements to nominate a new candidate and inform the Commission accordingly. Meanwhile, the Commission has suspended the printing of presidential ballot papers, which was near completion.”
The Commission extended its condolences to Madam Akua Donkor’s family. She passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra, although further details regarding her death have not been disclosed.
As the founder and leader of the GFP, Madam Donkor was a respected advocate for farmers’ and women’s rights in Ghana. Her passing is a significant loss to her party and supporters, particularly with general elections approaching on December 7, 2024.
With the elections on the horizon, the GFP is expected to act swiftly in selecting a new candidate to represent the party in her place.
