AFCONQ 2025: Ghana’s hopes hang by thread after 0-2 defeat to Kwasi Appiah’s Sudan

Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) took a significant blow after a 2-0 defeat to Sudan on Tuesday, October 15. The match, held in Libya as part of the Group F qualifiers, saw the Black Stars struggle against a resilient Sudanese side.

Sudan took the lead in the 62nd minute after a defensive error in the Ghanaian box. A failed clearance resulted in a chaotic scramble, allowing Ahmed Hamed Mahmoud to tap in after Gideon Mensah’s attempted clearance off the line. Mahmoud capitalized on the confusion, slotting the ball into the net to make it 1-0.

Just three minutes later, the Falcons of Jediane doubled their advantage. Mohamed Abdelrahman outmuscled defender Mohammed Salisu before calmly beating Ghana’s goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi, extending Sudan’s lead to 2-0.

Ghana’s Inaki Williams came close to pulling one back with a volley from a well-delivered cross by Tariq Lamptey, but his effort narrowly missed the target. Despite some late pressure from the Black Stars, they couldn’t find the back of the net.

The loss leaves Ghana’s AFCON qualification hopes in jeopardy. Otto Addo’s side now sits third in Group F with just two points from four matches, having failed to win any of their games so far. With only two matches remaining against Niger and Angola in November, Ghana will need to secure victories and rely on other results to keep their qualification hopes alive.
