Erling Haaland produced a moment of brilliance as Manchester City cruised to a commanding victory over Sparta Prague, maintaining their unbeaten streak in the Champions League at the Etihad Stadium.
Haaland, who had twice been denied by Sparta’s goalkeeper Peter Vindahl, finally found the back of the net with a spectacular acrobatic backheel volley from a pinpoint cross by Savinho midway through the second half. The Norwegian striker’s audacious finish left the crowd and even himself in awe, providing City with some much-needed breathing space after a string of missed chances.
Phil Foden had given City an early lead just three minutes into the game, with a clinical shot into the bottom corner. Despite dominating the first half and creating several opportunities, the hosts were only a goal ahead at the break, thanks to Vindahl’s superb saves, frustrating both Haaland and Foden from adding to the tally.
Haaland’s dazzling goal reignited City’s attack after the interval, and John Stones added to the scoreline with a towering header, extending his impressive form after his weekend heroics. Haaland then capped off his performance by netting his second goal of the night, a composed curling effort, bringing his incredible Champions League tally to 44 goals at the age of 24.
Matheus Nunes wrapped up the 5-0 rout by converting a late penalty, notching his first Champions League goal and sealing City’s dominant display.
The victory puts Manchester City firmly in control of their group, with two wins and a draw, continuing their strong start to the competition.
