Chelsea’s long-serving goalkeeping coach Hilario has resigned from his position and is set to join Thomas Tuchel’s coaching staff with the England national team.
Hilario, 49, enjoyed a distinguished 16-year tenure at Stamford Bridge, initially as a player and later as a coach. He spent two spells at Chelsea, making 39 appearances as a goalkeeper between 2006 and 2014 before transitioning into coaching.
Under Tuchel, Hilario had served as Chelsea’s goalkeeping coach, having been promoted to the role by Maurizio Sarri after initially working as an assistant under Antonio Conte. He remained part of Chelsea’s staff through the tenures of Graham Potter, Mauricio Pochettino, and current manager Enzo Maresca.
Hilario’s move to England follows Tuchel’s appointment as national team manager in October, as the German looks to rebuild the squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup. His tenure officially begins on January 1, 2025.
It’s understood that while Hilario was open to a potential job-sharing arrangement at Chelsea, the club was not in agreement with such an arrangement. His departure comes shortly after Martyn Margetson, who had been England’s goalkeeping coach under Gareth Southgate, left following the Euro 2024 tournament.
Tuchel, 51, will now aim to guide England to their first major tournament win since the 1966 World Cup, starting with the 2026 competition.
