Focus on producing quality content – Idris Elba tells African filmmakers

Acclaimed British actor Idris Elba has called on African filmmakers to prioritize producing high-quality content that meets global standards. During an interview with Channel One TV at the Africa Cinema Summit on Wednesday, Elba stressed the importance of leveraging technological advancements to create professional-grade films that can compete internationally.

Elba emphasized that African filmmakers should first focus on capturing the local market before aiming for international recognition. “We need to consider appealing to our local audiences across Africa, not just in Ghana but also in Nigeria, West Africa, and South Africa. People across the continent love movies,” he explained. “While international success is important, it’s crucial to succeed at home first. American films, for instance, often become domestic hits before achieving success abroad.”

Highlighting the availability of affordable, high-quality filmmaking equipment, Elba urged African filmmakers to eliminate any excuses for substandard production. “We have the tools – quality cameras and microphones are accessible to everyone now. So, there’s no reason not to produce films that meet the global standard. We must focus on quality,” he insisted.

Idris Elba is currently in Ghana attending the second edition of the Africa Cinema Summit, which commenced on October 7 and will conclude on Thursday, October 10. The event, organized by the National Film Authority, is being held at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra. The summit aims to promote collaboration, innovation, and sustainable growth in the African film industry, providing a platform for stakeholders to discuss the future of cinema on the continent.
