The Institute of Energy Security (IES) is endorsing increasing calls for the merger of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and the Energy Commission of Ghana. This proposal, gaining momentum among industry experts and policymakers, aims to streamline regulatory functions, cut operational costs, and eliminate potential overlaps in overseeing Ghana’s energy sector.
IES argues that consolidating these two regulatory bodies into a single entity would not only result in significant cost savings but also improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of energy regulation in the country.
Nana Amoasi IV, Executive Director of IES, believes that a unified regulatory authority would enhance policy formulation and implementation, which is essential given the current challenges in Ghana’s energy landscape. He emphasized that merging the PURC and the Energy Commission could help address some of the sector’s difficulties by streamlining decision-making processes and minimizing bureaucratic delays.
