Jordan Ayew made history on Saturday by becoming the first Ghanaian to net 40 Premier League goals, solidifying his place among Ghanaian football legends.
The 32-year-old reached this milestone with a coolly converted penalty in the 95th minute during Leicester City’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea at the King Power Stadium. Ayew now leads Ghanaian scorers in the Premier League, surpassing iconic players like Tony Yeboah (24 goals) and Michael Essien (17 goals).
Leicester faced an uphill battle against a dominant Chelsea side. Nicolas Jackson opened the scoring in the 15th minute, latching onto an incisive pass from Enzo Fernandez before finishing emphatically. Fernandez added Chelsea’s second moments later, heading in after Jackson’s initial shot was parried by goalkeeper Mads Hermansen.
The Foxes suffered an early setback when key midfielder Harry Winks was forced off with an ankle injury in the 11th minute. They struggled to create opportunities, with Kasey McAteer coming closest in the first half, only to miss the target.
Chelsea controlled the game with over 66% possession, climbing to third in the Premier League standings. While Leicester’s performance left much to be desired, Ayew’s historic goal was a bright spot in an otherwise challenging match for the home side.
