Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has been appointed as the global head of soccer for Red Bull, starting on January 1, 2025.
The 57-year-old German, who spent nearly 25 years managing from the sidelines, expressed his enthusiasm for his new role. “I’m thrilled to embark on this project,” Klopp said. “While my role is changing, my love for football and the people within the sport remains as strong as ever.”
Red Bull owns multiple football clubs, including RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, New York Red Bulls in Major League Soccer, and Red Bull Bragantino in Brazil. They also have a minority stake in Leeds United and became the Championship club’s main shirt sponsor earlier this year.
In his new position, Klopp will not handle day-to-day operations but will provide strategic guidance on playing philosophy, transfer policies, and the development of coaching staff across the various clubs.
“Jürgen Klopp is one of the most iconic and influential figures in global football, possessing exceptional skills and unmatched charisma,” said Oliver Mintzlaff, Red Bull’s CEO of corporate projects and investments. “In his new capacity, he will play a pivotal role in elevating our soccer teams and expanding our impact on the global stage.”
Klopp enjoyed a highly successful spell at Liverpool, where he spent nine years and won eight major trophies, including the Premier League and UEFA Champions League. He stepped down from his position at the end of last season.
His coaching journey began at Mainz in 2001 before moving to Borussia Dortmund in 2008, where he claimed two Bundesliga titles and led the team to the 2013 Champions League final. Klopp initially took a break from management in 2015, but cut it short to replace Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool later that year.
Aside from football, Red Bull has a significant presence in sports, with investments in ice hockey, extreme sports, and motorsports, including two teams in Formula 1, where Red Bull Racing currently holds both the drivers’ and constructors’ titles.
A formal press conference to introduce Klopp in his new role will be held in mid-January.
