Spintex Knights, representing the Accra Basketball League (ABL), have made history by becoming the first Ghanaian team to reach the Elite 16 stage of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) qualifiers.
The Knights advanced from the initial phase of the “Road To BAL,” competing in the preliminary round of qualifiers last week in Libya. They faced tough opponents, including Elan Coton from Benin, ABC Fighters from Côte d’Ivoire, and Mighty Barrolle from Liberia.
The Knights kicked off their campaign with a victory over Elan Coton but faced defeats against ABC Fighters and Mighty Barrolle. In a closely contested final game in West Division Group B, they narrowly lost 69-73 to Mighty Barrolle. Despite these setbacks, the Knights secured their place in the next round, finishing second in the group.
Spintex Knights, Mighty Barrolle, and Elan Coton all ended the group stage with identical records, but the Ghanaian team advanced on superior points difference, clinching the second qualification spot behind group leaders ABC Fighters.
This achievement puts the Knights one step ahead of the Braves of Customs, Ghana’s first BAL representatives, who were unable to progress beyond the early stages in 2019. The Nobles will now focus on the Elite 16, set to take place in Ivory Coast next month.
