American filmmaker Tyler Perry has reportedly settled a dispute with Ghanaian highlife musician Kofi Nti over the unapproved use of Nti’s song, Odo Nwom. The track, featuring fellow highlife artist Ofori Amponsah, was featured in a behind-the-scenes video from Perry’s popular TV series Sistas and quickly gained attention as it circulated on social media.
Upon learning of the usage, Kofi Nti’s legal team in the UK reached out to Perry’s representatives. Following productive discussions, both parties reached an amicable agreement.
Kofi Nti expressed satisfaction with the outcome, commending the respectful and professional manner in which the negotiations were conducted.
This case underscores the increasing global visibility of Ghanaian music and the importance of protecting artists’ intellectual property on an international scale.
