Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah has achieved a remarkable milestone, guiding Sudan to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Sudanese team secured their spot in Africa’s premier football tournament with a hard-fought goalless draw against Angola in their final Group F match, played on Monday at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Libya.
Sudan finished the qualifiers in second place with eight points, trailing group leaders Angola, who amassed 14 points. Despite playing all their matches away from home due to political instability, Sudan delivered impressive performances under Appiah’s leadership.
Appiah, who took over the Sudanese team earlier this year on a three-year contract, navigated numerous challenges, including the absence of home support. His tactical acumen and resilience steered Sudan to their first AFCON qualification since 2021.
A pivotal moment in their campaign came in October, when Sudan defeated Appiah’s former side, Ghana, 2-0 in a decisive match. This victory was instrumental in their qualification journey.
Appiah’s achievement echoes that of the late Sir Jones Attuquayefio, another Ghanaian coach who led Benin to the 2004 AFCON—a year Ghana did not qualify. This year, history repeated itself, as Ghana’s Black Stars endured a dismal campaign, finishing last in Group F with just three points and failing to secure a single win.
Sudan, winners of the 1970 AFCON as hosts, have struggled to make an impact in the modern era of the tournament. They have only advanced beyond the group stage once in the past 24 editions.
However, with Appiah at the helm, hopes are high for a more competitive showing in 2025. His leadership has revitalized the team, and Sudan now looks forward to proving themselves on the continental stage.
