LeBron James and his son Bronny made history as the first father-son duo to play together in an NBA game during the Los Angeles Lakers’ season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves. This long-awaited moment happened with just four minutes remaining in the first half of the Lakers’ 110-103 win when coach JJ Redick sent the pair onto the court together.
As LeBron and Bronny stepped onto the floor at the Crypto.com Arena, the sold-out crowd erupted with excitement. At the time, the Lakers were leading 51-35. The pair had already shared the court earlier in the month during a pre-season game against the Phoenix Suns, but this marked their official regular-season debut.
LeBron, reflecting on the historic occasion, said, “It’s always been family first. I missed a lot of time because of this league, so having the chance to work alongside my son is one of the greatest blessings I’ve received. I’m going to cherish every moment.”
The moment was even more special with Ken Griffey Sr. and Ken Griffey Jr. watching courtside, as they were the first father and son to play together in Major League Baseball for the Seattle Mariners in 1990-1991.
Bronny, 20, played three minutes in the first half, missing both of his field-goal attempts but grabbing an offensive rebound. LeBron contributed eight points and three rebounds in 17 minutes before halftime, finishing the game with 16 points in 35 minutes of action.
Bronny expressed his gratitude after the game, saying, “Checking in for the first time was a surreal moment that I’ll never forget. I’m incredibly thankful for this opportunity to be in the league, learn, and improve every day.”
Bronny joined the Lakers as a second-round draft pick in June after playing for the University of Southern California. Meanwhile, LeBron, at 39, continues his legendary NBA career as the league’s all-time leading scorer and a four-time NBA champion. Now in his 22nd season, LeBron hasn’t indicated when he plans to retire, having signed a two-year contract extension with the Lakers following Bronny’s arrival.
