In an effort to eradicate illicit activities throughout Ghana and clean up the lottery sector, the National Lottery Authority (NLA) has licensed 15 Private lottery Operators (PLOs). these Lotto Operators required legal documentation was completed, and on Friday, August 30, 2024, the formal licensing ceremony was held at the NLA Headquarters in Accra.
This comes after a round of talks that resulted in an agreement on regulatory compliance between the NLA Board and members of the Ghana Lotto Operators Association (GLOA). The newly licensed Lotto Operators include Alpha Lotto Limited, Obiri Asare and Sons Company Limited, Zacdow Company Limited, Glovita Lottery Company Limited, and Makafui Mogyi Company Limited.
The rest are: Accurate Giant Company Limited, From Home Company Limited, Miwor Kakra Yɛbedi Nti Company Limited, Super Rand Ventures, Best Chance Lottery Company, SB Business Ventures, Vision 2000 Lotto Limited, Diblo Lotto, Rand Lotteries Company Limited, and Luma Technologies and Trading Company Limited.
With adherence to the licensing scheme specified in the National Lotto Act 2006 (Act 722), the Lottery Regulations 2008 (L.I. 1948), and the Veterans Administration Ghana (VAG) Act 2012 (Act 844), these Lotto Operators companies are now officially authorised to operate under the NLA’s framework.
The importance of this license procedure was underlined by NLA Board Chairman Gary Nimako Marfo, who described it as a vital step in regulating the lottery sector. He gave the operators the reassurance that the NLA’s goal was to guarantee compliance and equitable revenue generation for the government, not to interfere with their operations. In addition, he issued a warning against illicit lottery operations and asked recently licensed operators to assist in stopping them. Marfo announced that from now on, the only businesses allowed to operate in Ghana are the licensed operators and the eight enterprises that were previously licensed.
At the ceremony, it was also announced that the lottow writers’ commission will drop from 40% to 25%. This decision was made after consulting with all relevant parties, including the recently licensed PLOs. Acting Chairman of GLOA Noah Afonope thanked the NLA on behalf of the operators, acknowledging the difficulties encountered throughout the licensing procedure but expressing hope for the future.
