Mahama Promises 20% Allowance To Rural-Based Teachers, Health Workers

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has said that teachers and health personnel who accept postings to rural areas will receive a 20% allowance. Speaking to party supporters at the NDC manifesto launch in Winneba, Mahama clarified that the goal of this incentive is to incentivise more staff to work in rural areas, closing the development gap that exists between rural and urban populations.

Mahama also out that the majority of educators and medical professionals currently choose to work in cities, which limits access to basic services for those living in rural areas. The NDC administration would compensate people who accept posts in rural areas with an additional 20% of their base pay in order to remedy this.

Mahama

“We’ll push ahead basic salary for teachers and health workers who accept postings to rural areas. Most of our teachers and health workers don’t want to go to rural areas; everybody wants to serve in the city.”

“So, we are going to map out what we define as our areas, if you accept posting to go there, you’ll get 20% of your basic salary as an incentive, to teach in the rural area.”
