Ministry of Information holds training for Arts and Culture journalists

The Ministry of Information, under its Media Capacity Enhancement Programme, hosted a workshop for arts and culture journalists in Accra on Friday, October 11, 2024. The event, held at the Accra Tourist Information Centre, brought together journalists from various media outlets to enhance their understanding of key legal issues affecting the creative industry.

A major focus of the workshop was on Intellectual Property (IP) laws, as well as the Creative Arts Industry Act (Act 1048). Legal practitioner Kwadwo Ofori Dankwah Esq. led a session explaining the diverse nature of the creative economy and key aspects of the Creative Arts Industry Act, which serves as a regulatory framework for Ghana’s creative arts sector. He also provided an in-depth analysis of the legal case between Mark Darlington Osae and the Food and Drugs Authority concerning the ban on celebrities endorsing alcoholic beverages, discussing the wider implications of the ruling.

In addition, University of Education, Winneba lecturer Benjamin Oduro Arhin Jnr. (Bnoskka), an expert in copyright law, highlighted critical aspects of intellectual property rights and what constitutes copyright infringement. He also addressed media-related issues, particularly the use of copyrighted music in Live Presenter Mentions (LPMs) during radio broadcasts, cautioning journalists about the misuse of intellectual property.

This workshop is part of the broader Media Capacity Enhancement Programme aimed at improving the skills and expertise of journalists across the country. The session for arts journalists followed a previous training that involved 100 journalists from various regions between September 10 and 13, 2024.
