A model and pageant hopeful, Chidimma Adetshina, has declared her intention to compete in Miss Universe Nigeria after being forced to withdraw from Miss South Africa owing to a dispute over her nationality. In an Instagram post, Chidimma announced that she has accepted an offer to compete in Miss Universe Nigeria from Silverbird Group, the pageant’s organizers.
Ms. Adetshina was a previous competitor in the Miss South Africa competition this year, but she withdrew after receiving abuse from South Africans over her nationality. Chidimma’s nationality was questioned despite her South African citizenship due to her Nigerian father and Mozambican mother. At the request of Miss South Africa organizers, the South African Home Affairs department looked into Ms. Adetshina’s mother further and came to the conclusion that she might have used “identity fraud” to get South African nationality.
For the protection and welfare of her family, Ms. Adetshina then left the competition. After she left, Ms. Adetshina received an invitation to compete from Miss Nigeria organizers, who assured her that her time in pageantry was far from finished. The Miss Universe Nigeria winner will compete in the prestigious Miss Universe pageant in November on behalf of her nation.
