West Ham United coach Julen Lopetegui hopes Mohammed Kudus will take a valuable lesson from his red card in last weekend’s match against Tottenham Hotspur.
The Ghanaian international, who had scored the game’s opening goal, was sent off just four minutes before the end of the match, which the Hammers ultimately lost 4-1.
Ahead of West Ham’s upcoming fixture against Manchester United, Lopetegui shared his disappointment over the incident in a press conference, urging Kudus to avoid similar situations in the future.
The former Real Madrid and Wolves manager underscored the importance of managing emotions during tense moments. “Mohammed Kudus is still young, and while he’s obviously disappointed, so are we. Situations like this happen, but I hope it’s the last,” Lopetegui said. “I’ve spoken to him, and he knows that the best way to handle frustration is to channel it back into the game. I’m confident he’ll learn from this and manage these moments better in the future.”
The incident unfolded after Kudus was tackled by Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven. In response to a taunting gesture from van de Ven, Kudus reacted by poking the defender in the face and then confronted Pape Sarr. After reviewing the incident with video assistance, the referee decided to upgrade Kudus’ yellow card to a red, marking his first sending-off since 2019.
