The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has issued a notice to the government, warning of a possible nationwide strike in November if their long-standing demands are not addressed.
MOWAG is calling for improved working conditions, including fair wages, safer workplaces, and sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE) for its members. The Association claims these concerns have gone unresolved since 2019, despite repeated appeals to the government.
Richard Kofi Jordan, MOWAG’s General Secretary, voiced the Association’s frustration during an interview with Citi FM. He accused the government of stalling negotiations by asking for excessive documentation, which he sees as a tactic to delay addressing their grievances.
Despite years of attempts to negotiate, mortuary workers continue to face unsafe and hazardous working conditions that jeopardize their health and safety. MOWAG argues that the government’s slow response has now made the situation intolerable for its members.
Mr. Jordan highlighted that as a last resort, the Association is now considering a strike to press the government into action. He expressed hope that this warning would push authorities to address their demands, thus avoiding a nationwide disruption of essential services.
“We cannot initiate the strike in the middle of the month, so we’re planning for another week. It could be the end of this month or the first week of November, depending on how things proceed,” Mr. Jordan said. “The government recently requested specific data from us, and while we’re providing it, we feel this is simply a delay tactic.”
He stressed that MOWAG is prepared to proceed with the strike if their demands are not met within the month.
