The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced plans to hold additional consultations with stakeholders to determine the future of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo.
This follows a technical review meeting held on Wednesday, November 27, between the GFA and the 47-year-old coach, after Ghana’s failure to secure a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Despite widespread criticism and calls for Addo’s dismissal following a winless campaign in six qualifying matches, the GFA has decided to engage with key stakeholders before making a final decision.
In a statement, the GFA expressed the shared frustration of Ghanaians over the Black Stars’ performance and emphasized the importance of a clear strategy to improve results ahead of upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
“The Executive Council and the Regional Football Chairmen shared the nation’s disappointment with the Head Coach at the meeting and reiterated the collective desire for Ghana to qualify for the World Cup. Improved performances and results are crucial in the upcoming games,” the statement said.
The GFA added that further discussions with stakeholders across the football ecosystem would be conducted to develop a comprehensive plan for the national team.
Having extended his contract for three years in March, Otto Addo has endured a difficult tenure. Ghana’s inability to secure a single victory in the AFCON qualifiers saw the team finish at the bottom of Group F with three draws and three losses.
The disappointing campaign means the Black Stars will miss the AFCON for the first time in two decades. The tournament is set to take place in Morocco next year.
While Addo previously served as an assistant coach at Borussia Dortmund, his leadership of the Black Stars has come under scrutiny. The GFA’s decision to consult broadly suggests a focus on creating a long-term strategy to restore the team’s competitiveness on the international stage.
The upcoming World Cup qualifiers will be a critical test, as Ghana seeks to rebuild and regain its status as a football powerhouse.
