The parliamentary primary for the New Patriotic Party’s Walewale constituency was rerun on Monday, however there was misunderstanding. Following the primary’s new location, the voting procedure itself proceeded without a hitch. One person tried to flee with some ballot papers that were stolen during the sorting process following the vote, which concluded at around 4 p.m. There are reports that he tore up some voting papers. However, the police stepped in, gathered the documents, and took the guy into custody.
There were gunshots heard, which were allegedly warning shots fired by the police to keep everyone sane. Right now, the suspect is being held by the police. After that, the party officials stepped in to keep things under control, and the voting materials were taken to the police station so that the procedure could resume. The Electoral Commission’s North East Regional Director, Gabriel Manu, reported that the procedure began in the morning and proceeded without a hitch.
Mr. Manu claimed to have heard a gunshot as the person stole the voting papers during the sorting process. The NPP’s Walewale Constituency parliamentary primary results were invalidated by the Tamale High Court last week, and a new primary was mandated. The court ruled that fraud, impersonation, and excessive voting tainted the first election. In a fiercely contested primary in January, Hajia Lariba, the sitting member of parliament for Walewale, was narrowly beaten by Dr. Kabiru Mahama, special counsellor to the vice president.
Dr. Kabiru became victorious in the election, garnering 345 votes as opposed to Hajia Lariba’s 338. The current Member of Parliament (MP), dissatisfied with the results, filed a lawsuit on January 27 to contest them, claiming electoral fraud and anomalies. The NPP then decided to reschedule the election for Monday, September 8, 2024, but on Sunday, September 8, 2024. Voting was supposed to begin at 7 a.m., but it was postponed because the Walewale Pentecost Church was the new location after the Walewale Senior High Technical School and the Walewale Astroturf were the first two locations. It was anticipated that 842 delegates will cast ballots.
