Police approve NDC’s September 17, demo

The Ghana Police Service has given permission to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by to hold its demonstration against the Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. In advance of the elections in December, the party intends to push for a forensic audit of the voter rolls. Following a meeting at the EC headquarters between the party’s leadership and the Accra Regional Police Command, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the general secretary of the NDC, made the declaration.

He went on to say that the protest would take place concurrently throughout the entire nation, not just in the Greater Accra Region. The demonstration’s prearranged path in Accra is to start at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, go via the Ministry, TUC, and Farisco Traffic Light, and end in front of the EC building. Mr. Kwetey underscored the importance of the protest, emphasising that it transcends political affiliations.

In order to guarantee transparency, he continued, the NDC is pushing for a forensic assessment of the voter registration. The statewide protest, according to NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, is in retaliation for the EC’s reluctance to order a forensic audit of the voter registration. He said that doubts have been aroused by the register’s lack of openness, which is why the protest is necessary.
