The Ghana Police Service has launched a National Security Elections Task Force Briefing Centre to provide timely updates and ensure a peaceful electoral process during the 2024 general elections.
This initiative is designed to counter misinformation and disinformation that could threaten the credibility of the elections, while addressing potential security concerns before, during, and after the polls.
At a press briefing, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare outlined the measures being put in place, including a strategic partnership with telecommunication companies to improve communication efficiency.
“We are collaborating with the telcos to assign a dedicated contact number for this centre,” Dr. Dampare explained. “This number will be made available to the media, political parties, and other stakeholders to ensure quick reporting and immediate response to any incidents.”
The contact lines will facilitate direct communication between journalists and the Police Management Board (POMAB), allowing real-time updates on emergencies and ensuring rapid interventions to protect voters and electoral officials.
Dr. Dampare emphasized the role of cooperation among the police, media, and public in maintaining order, stating, “Our approach will involve proactive engagement with stakeholders at the highest levels to effectively manage the process.”
The task force briefing centre is a key component of the police strategy to safeguard the electoral process and uphold peace throughout the election period.
