2024 polls: PPP sues EC over disqualification

The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has filed a lawsuit against the Electoral Commission (EC) following the disqualification of its presidential candidate, Kofi Asamoah-Siaw, from the upcoming 2024 elections.

The EC, on Friday, announced the disqualification of 11 presidential aspirants, including Asamoah-Siaw, while approving 13 candidates for the December 7 elections. EC Chairperson Jean Mensa explained that all candidates had been given the opportunity to correct any errors found in their nomination forms.

However, PPP National Chairman Nana Ofori Owusu contested this claim, arguing that the party was not given a fair chance to address mistakes on their submission.

On September 25, 2024, the PPP filed an application for judicial review, challenging the EC’s decision. The High Court is scheduled to hear the case on September 30, 2024. The PPP’s motion seeks to overturn the September 20, 2024, letter from the EC that disqualified Asamoah-Siaw and requests an order requiring the EC to accept his nomination forms with necessary corrections, allowing him to contest in the presidential race.

The PPP’s legal team is expected to present their arguments at 9 AM, hoping to reverse the EC’s disqualification of their candidate.
