World leaders and officials around the globe have begun reacting to the unfolding results of the 2024 U.S. presidential election as former President Donald Trump, currently leading the race against Vice President Kamala Harris, has declared victory.
French President Emmanuel Macron extended his congratulations on X, expressing readiness to collaborate once more. “Ready to work together as we have done for four years,” Macron wrote, alluding to Trump’s first term. “With your convictions and mine, we can pursue more peace and prosperity.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also offered congratulations to Trump and his wife, Melania, calling it “history’s greatest comeback.” Netanyahu emphasized that Trump’s return signifies “a powerful recommitment to the great alliance between Israel and America.” Other Israeli leaders, including President Isaac Herzog, Defense Minister Israel Katz, and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, expressed similar sentiments.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, an ally of Trump, celebrated what he called “the biggest comeback in U.S. political history,” praising the “enormous win” as a “much-needed victory for the world.” Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto voiced hopes that U.S.-Hungarian relations would return to “peak form,” noting their shared views on issues like immigration and family protection. He also expressed optimism for peace in Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described Trump’s victory as “impressive” in his post on X, looking forward to “a strong United States of America under President Trump’s decisive leadership.” Zelenskyy commended Trump’s “peace through strength” philosophy, hopeful that this approach would bring peace to Ukraine.
In Russia, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova shared a video of Harris quoting a psalm, adding her own comment: “Hallelujah.” Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev noted on Telegram that Trump’s pragmatic approach may lead to reduced U.S. spending abroad, hinting at potential limits to American support for Ukraine.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte emphasized Trump’s role in maintaining a strong alliance and expressed anticipation for working together to promote global peace and stability. Ursula von der Leyen, European Commission president, congratulated Trump, affirming the EU-U.S. partnership and its commitment to a shared transatlantic agenda.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a statement congratulating Trump, reaffirming the close alliance between the U.S. and the U.K. “As the closest of allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defense of our shared values of freedom, democracy, and enterprise,” he said. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, expressing optimism, described Italy and the U.S. as “sister nations” with a bond that will only strengthen.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated his “friend” Trump, expressing hope for bolstered U.S.-Turkey relations and progress on issues like the Palestinian conflict and the Russia-Ukraine war.
