Quartey died on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at the age of 54. While details surrounding his death have not yet been made public, his legacy in boxing remains deeply celebrated.
Quartey’s professional boxing career spanned nearly two decades, from 1988 to 2006, during which he built an impressive record of 37 wins, 4 losses, and 1 draw across 42 bouts. Known for his formidable punching power, he achieved 31 of those victories by knockout. Competing under the nickname “Bazooka,” Quartey became a dominant force in the WBA’s welterweight, light-welterweight, and light-middleweight divisions. His career peaked when he held the WBA welterweight title from 1994 to 1998, cementing his reputation as one of the sport’s most feared jab artists.
Among Quartey’s most memorable fights was his highly publicized 1999 matchup with American boxing star Oscar De La Hoya at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Quartey also brought pride to Ghana on the international stage, winning a silver medal in the men’s Light Welterweight (63.5 kg) category at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Russia. His achievements have left a lasting impact on Ghanaian boxing and the global sporting community.
