The race for the Shai Osudoku Constituency parliamentary seat is intensifying, with two prominent female candidates, including the incumbent MP, Mrs. Linda Akweley Ocloo, gearing up to compete in the upcoming general elections.
The contest will feature Mrs. Ocloo, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Gifty Dede Koliyoo Hammond, running as an independent candidate, and Benjamin Nargeh of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who is making his second attempt after a loss in the 2020 elections.
Hammond, a Gospel singer and native of Agomeda, has entered the race with a commitment to uplift the constituency, which she describes as neglected and in poor condition. She is campaigning on promises of development in education, healthcare, and economic empowerment, with a particular focus on creating job opportunities for the youth and empowering women to secure strong support from voters.
The incumbent, Mrs. Ocloo, has been serving the constituency since 2016. She entered politics to succeed her late husband, the NDC’s 2016 parliamentary candidate, who tragically passed away in a car accident. Since then, she has established a robust political presence in Shai Osudoku. Ocloo’s background as an economist and Client Services Consultant at Old Mutual Assurance, coupled with her educational qualifications—a Business Administration degree from the University of Cape Coast and a diploma in Banking and Insurance—has bolstered her credentials in the constituency.
In her first parliamentary bid in 2016, Mrs. Ocloo won with 20,114 votes, representing 67.07% of the total votes, and further solidified her position in 2020 with 34,555 votes, securing her re-election with an increased margin.
The Shai Osudoku Constituency has traditionally been an NDC stronghold in the Greater Accra Region, with the party consistently winning both parliamentary and presidential elections there since 1996, highlighting its political significance for the NDC.
As the campaign unfolds, all three candidates are actively engaging with constituents to win their support in what is shaping up to be a highly contested race.
