Since joining Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017, Mohamed Salah has continually cemented his status as one of the Premier League’s greatest players. This was evident yet again over the weekend when the Egyptian forward led Liverpool to a 2-1 victory over his former club, Chelsea, at Anfield.
Although Curtis Jones had a standout performance, it was Salah who stole the spotlight. He contributed a goal from the penalty spot and delivered a crucial assist for Jones’ winning goal, keeping Liverpool at the top of the Premier League after eight matchdays. Salah’s penalty strike carried added weight as it lifted him into joint ninth on the Premier League’s all-time goal-scoring list, tying him with Tottenham legend Jermain Defoe at 162 goals. He now trails Liverpool icon Robbie Fowler by just one goal.
While Alan Shearer’s record of 260 goals may be out of reach for the time being, Salah’s incredible scoring prowess, combined with his form and relatively young age, suggests he could climb further up the rankings in the near future.
Known as the “Egyptian King” by Liverpool fans, Salah holds the record for the most left-footed goals in Premier League history, with 130, surpassing second-placed Robbie Fowler, who scored 105 with his left foot. Salah will equal Fowler’s overall tally if he finds the net in upcoming matches.
The Chelsea match also saw Salah notch his 160th Premier League goal for Liverpool, solidifying his position as the club’s all-time leading scorer in the competition. He now sits 32 goals ahead of Fowler and 40 goals ahead of third-placed Steven Gerrard. Beyond Liverpool, Salah’s achievements resonate across the continent. His 162 Premier League goals are the most by any African player, leaving behind the likes of former Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane (111) and Chelsea legend Didier Drogba (104).
Salah’s penalty over the weekend marked his 27th successful spot-kick, placing him seventh on the all-time list of penalty scorers, just five behind Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard. His goal and assist against Chelsea also made it the 34th time Salah has both scored and assisted in the same Premier League game, second only to Wayne Rooney, who achieved it 36 times.
With 162 goals and 74 assists in the Premier League, Salah now ranks eighth in the league’s all-time goal contributions chart. His 233 goal involvements for Liverpool surpass all other Reds players, but he still trails behind some legends of the league such as Wayne Rooney (276), Ryan Giggs (271), Harry Kane (259), Thierry Henry (249), and Frank Lampard (237).
Salah’s impact is even more pronounced in matches against the Premier League’s “big six.” With 61 goals and assists in these encounters, he trails only Alan Shearer, who recorded 75. This underscores Salah’s ability to rise to the occasion in the most significant matches.
He has also scored 20 or more goals in four different Premier League seasons, a feat accomplished by only a few players like Thierry Henry (5 seasons), Sergio Aguero (6), Harry Kane (6), and Alan Shearer (7).
Already having tallied five goals and five assists in the 2024-2025 season, Salah leads the league for the most seasons with 10 or more goals and assists. While his future at Liverpool remains uncertain, with his contract set to expire next summer, Salah’s legacy in the English top flight is already secure. His extraordinary achievements will continue to set the standard for African players in the league.
