Nigerian artist Shallipopi recently opened up about the challenges he faced in trying to connect with established musicians before he gained fame. In a candid interview, Shallipopi revealed how, like many aspiring artists, he reached out to his favorite stars, but his messages often went unanswered.
Reflecting on these experiences, Shallipopi expressed understanding, saying he didn’t take the lack of response personally. “They don’t know you yet,” he explained. “It’s not about you – they have their own busy lives and commitments. When you’re unknown, it’s normal not to get a reply. But once you start making waves, that’s when they notice.”
He shared a specific example involving popular singer Rema. Though he initially messaged Rema as a fan and aspiring artist, it wasn’t until Shallipopi’s music gained traction that Rema took notice. This connection ultimately led to their collaboration on the track “Benin Boys.”
“For Benin Boys, I was the one who reached out to Rema first when he was already well-known,” Shallipopi recounted. “After my music started getting noticed, Rema finally replied, encouraging me to keep going. We eventually met in the studio, and that’s how Benin Boys came to life.”
To other up-and-coming artists, Shallipopi’s message is clear: stay persistent and continue working hard, as recognition and opportunities often come with success.
