Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Limited, an Independent Power Producer (IPP), has announced that it has yet to receive any payments from the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) despite previous assurances from the government. The company’s Business Development Manager, Dr. Elikplim Apetorgbor, confirmed that while the government has promised to address the debt, no payments have been made, adding further financial strain on the company.
Dr. Apetorgbor explained that Sunon Asogli had been notified by the CAGD in the first week of their recent shutdown, stating that the Ministry of Finance had approved a payment of $30 million. However, CAGD officials indicated that logistical challenges, including the timing of monthly salary disbursements, would mean splitting the payment into five or six installments. Despite assurances that the first installment would be paid alongside October salaries, no funds have been received as of November.
In response to Sunon Asogli’s shutdown of its 560MW power plant over a $259 million debt owed by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam announced last week that he had directed the Controller to release $30 million to the company. However, Dr. Apetorgbor criticized the Ministry’s handling of the matter, suggesting that the Finance Minister should have verified the status of the payment before making any public statements.
“It is disappointing that the Ministry of Finance would share information with the public without confirming its accuracy,” Dr. Apetorgbor said in an interview on Citi FM, adding that “the Ministry should be cautious with its communications, given its sensitive role in public finance.”
Dr. Apetorgbor urged the Ministry to ensure any future statements are fact-checked to avoid undermining the credibility of such important offices.
